Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
