Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
